When we were developing our study, we identified the problem or a gap. From this, we can identify what is the specific area of research or investigation that we are going to conduct. Based on this, we would want to consider what target population do we primarily want to study to better understand the problem, or where the gap is. If for example, I'm looking at study habits of 8th grade algebra students, does interviewing school administrators and teachers fit the bill for understanding the study habits?
Do I want to interview the students directly? Do I want to observe passively 8th grade algebra student in study hall, and maybe where they do their homework? Do I want to interview or survey parents regarding their 8th-grade students' study habits? Each of these is going to bring a very different response, and thereby a very different outcome for the study. Depending on how the study is set up any one of these options may be viable for the aspect of the problem that we are focusing on. Some might be better suited than others for particular aspects of the study.
As a researcher, it is our task to determine what is the best target population and thereby the best sample size, and demographics to represent the target population for this particular project. If we are looking at this particular problem, are we studying male and female, are we looking at age? Are we looking at honors students versus remedial students versus the general population? Are we looking at charter schools, private schools, STEM schools, homeschooling, and public schools in different socioeconomic areas? Most likely we are not going to try to cover all of that in one study as it would significantly enlarge the total study however this could become a research agenda thus we would want to look at what are the foundational elements that we want to look at and then we can expand out on in supplemental and additional studies perhaps we want to look at 8th-grade students in a middle-class school district, studying male and female 8th grade students13-14 years old, comparing their study habits with grade outcomes.
Question:
Would this lay the foundation for future studies?
