Three months ago, his HbA1c was 8.1 % on routine screening, so he started with some lifestyle modifications. Today his Hb A1c is 7.5%, with a random plasma glucose of 180 mg/dL. He has normal renal function and no other chronic medical problems. What is the best initial medication for this patient?
