You are hired as a consultant by a developer who wants to build a new small residential/commercial area outside of Davis. The community will feature 800 singlefamily homes and a small commercial district. The anticipated population of the newly
developed area is 3,000 people. The commercial area will include a service station, a small motel (30 rooms), a restaurant (20 tables, 4 seats/table), a coffee shop
and a shopping center with (10 stores, 40 parking spaces). Each home will have an average of 250 m2 of floor space and the total floor area of the commercial district will be 4000 m2
a) Clearly stating your assumptions, what is the average daily water supply required by the community?
b) Predict the maximum daily water use in the community.
c) How much wastewater should the community's wastewater treatment plant be designed to handle?
d) Determine the fire flow demand that the water supply system should be designed to handle.
e) If all residences are designed to include Level 1 conservation water conservation appliances, how much water will be saved on an annual basis? What is the percent reduction in the community's total water usage anticipated from applying
these conservation measures?
f) List at least two factors that might (i) increase or (ii) decrease the estimated water supply requirements you calculated in part a) above.
