Question: Austin wanted to better understand how the emotional valence of news articles and social media and influence our predictions about the future. Specifically, he wanted to know whether positive or negative news stories would alter individuals' outlook for the future. Additionally, he wanted to know whether news articles or social media posts would have a larger impact. To study this, Austin divided participants into two groups: a social media group and a news group. Participants in each group consumed a positive story and a negative story, after which they reported their optimism about the future. In other words, he manipulated story type between participants (article vs. social media), and valence of the story (positive vs. negative) within participants.
