Question 1 - (a) Suleiman has a mass m = 72 kg, rides his skateboard at a local skate park. He starts from rest at the top of the track and begins a descent down the track, always maintaining contact with the surface. The mass of the skateboard is negligible. What is Suleiman's speed, when he reaches 10m above the ground?
(b) A water skier, moving at a speed of 8.9 m/s, is being pulled by a tow rope that makes an angle of 37.0o with respect to the velocity of the boat. If the tension in the tow rope is 126 N, determine the power consumed in 14 s.
Question 2 - (a) While shopping in a mall, Abdullah helped his mother by pushing a trolley of mass 32kg at a constant speed, for 12m by applying a constant horizontal force of magnitude F0 on the trolley. If he did 420 J of work for this, determine the value of F0? Now if he applies a force greater than F0, how you will describe the subsequent motion of the trolley.
(b) Free-body diagrams for a situation is shown. If the body experiences a net force of 50 N left, determine the magnitude of the unknown forces D and E?
(c) A Physics 1 student got confused by a seeming contradiction in Newton's laws and asks her teacher the following question:
"If, for every force there is an equal and opposite reaction force, then all forces in nature come in equal and opposite pairs and are therefore balanced. Thus, since there can never be such a thing as an unbalanced force, how can any object ever accelerate?" Explain the mistake in this statement.
