Part 1

Materials: Small hand-held mirror, pencil (or pen), and a couple of sheets of paper.

1. Place the sheet of paper on a table, the pencil (or pen) in your right hand (left hand if left-handed).

2. Pick up the mirror in your left hand (right hand if left-handed).

3. Hold the mirror up at an angle to see the reflection of the paper.

4. While looking into the mirror, draw a house/hut with doors and windows.

5. Still looking only into the mirror, draw a clock showing the correct time.

6. Remember, you should only look in the mirror while you are drawing.

7. Do not worry if your drawings are not perfect or accurate. You will not be graded on how excellent your house/hut or clock looks.

Part II

Discuss (in detail) your reflections. How did you feel when you were drawing the images through the mirror? Was it difficult or easy? Discuss what you learned through this experiential exercise.

Part III

What is successful aging? What does the study of successful aging highlight? What does successful aging based on the SOC model do? Is Dementia due to intrinsic or extrinsic causes? What causes it? What are the signs and symptoms of Dementia? Can Dementia be prevented or delayed? What measures can one take to prevent or delay the onset of Dementia? Discuss qualities or traits the caregiver needs to have to help someone with Dementia. Describe two communication strategies one must adopt and apply to relieve distress, agitation, and challenging behaviors when caring for a person with Dementia. In addition, I want you to debunk the consequences of the caregiving role. The effects and burdens of formal or informal caregiving often go unrecognized. What must be done to alleviate, if not end, the social isolation and psychological and physical ill-health of the caregivers? Please relate your responses to the content in Chapter 4. If needed, browse the Internet for the questions on Dementia.
