Introduction
The Vietnam War was a costly, divisive, and protracted conflict lasting from 1954 until 1975. The war pitted the communist government of North Vietnam and its allies against South Vietnam and its main ally, the United States. The United States' involvement as an ally of South Vietnam came shortly after the end of World War II. The conflict was further intensified by the ongoing Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union.
