Solitary Confinement: Forensics

INSTRUCTIONS

Solitary confinment is a method of punishment for incarcerated individuals. They are put into a room by themselves with no one to talk to and no contact to even speak to another person. In this lesson you are going to watch videos and read articles about what solitary confinement is like. Then you will read an article about someone who was not even convicted, that was forced to spend two years in solitary confinement.

Once you've finished watching the videos and reading the articles, you'll create a presentation (in PowerPoint) outlining what solitary confinement is, if you believe it should be abolished, and persuading your audience that it is a form or torture or you think that it serves its purpose. You will use facts from what you hear, see and read to create your presentation.

Checklist:

  • What is solitary confinement?
  • What are the two sides of the controversy involving solitary confinement?
  • What is your stance on solitary confinement: do you think it's a successful punishment? Do you think its a form or torture?
  • Do you think it will help prisoners be integrated back into the community when they've finished their sentence or do you think it will make them even more likely to reoffend?
  • Create a 8 to 10 slide presentation including facts about solitary confinement and why you're position on the topic is what it is.
  • Make sure your presentation is visually stimulating.
  • Upload the document when finished.
