Assignment:
We are beginning our discussion of what social science is and why it's an important area of study. In the Why Social Science? resource, you saw the range of topics that social scientists study, everything from how to solve the problem of gun violence, to safety in the workplace, to the impacts of technology, to how to address climate change, to the use of generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI). Because social scientists study such a broad range of topics, it can be tough to really narrow in on a topic that might be interesting or useful to you. In this discussion, you will use a Gen AI tool, like ChatGPT, Bing Copilot, or Google Gemini to brainstorm research questions that social scientists might be interested in studying. You may choose to use this as a springboard for your Final Project in this course, as well.
For this discussion, please do the following:
1. Identify a broad topic that you might be interested in. Some examples are below. This list is in no way exhaustive, so if there's something that interests you, feel free to give it a try!
- The environment and climate change
- Business
- Healthcare
- Social inequality
- Poverty
- Homelessness
- Education
- Politics
2. Go to one of the Gen AI tools listed above and ask it to provide you with some questions that social scientists might ask about the topic you chose.
3. Pick two questions from the list that you think are interesting to explore further in the discussion.
Discussion Post:
Now, it's time to complete your discussion post. Start by telling us the broad topic you chose, which Gen AI tool you chose, and what prompt(s) you used to get it to provide a list of topics.
Then, identify the questions or topics that you chose to explore further. For each, use at least two of this week's resources to discuss why it's a topic that a social scientist might want to explore.
Finally, what are the positives of using the Gen AI tool you used in this way? What are the negatives?
Your initial post should be at least 200 words, excluding the discussion prompt and the references. Please use in-text APA citations within your post as well as full APA references at the end of your post.
