Diglycerol tetraether membrane lipids can be found in many archaeal species. The extreme thermophiles contain almost exclusively this type of lipids in their membrane while the percentage of this type of lipids is much lower in the membrane of methanogens. What is so special about these lipids? Why are there such differences in their membrane structure?
