ASSIGNMENT : DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS & FACTOR ANALYSIS

Part A: SPSS Instructions

Complete this assignment using the 'IMMIGRANT CHILDREN DATA" secondary data set using the personality variables v101-v110 seen below.

V101 "I feel i am a person of worth"

V 102 "i have a number of good qualities"

V103 "i am inclined to feel i am a failure"

V104 "i do things as well as other people"

V105 "i do not have much to be proud of"

V106 "i take a positive attitude toward myself"

V107 "i am satisfied with myself'

V108 "i wish i had more respect for myself"

V109 "i certainly feel useless at times"

V110"at times i think i am no good at all"

PART A: STATISTICAL TASK:

1. Using syntax or point and click method run an EXPLORATORY FACTOR ANLAYSIS, & RELIABILITY ANALYSES.

2. After assessing the reliability of each component/factor, use syntax or point and click method to create a corresponding STANDARDIZED SCALES for each composite measure. Only scale those variables that meet the Cronbach's alpha cut-off. Be sure to properly label your new computed interval-ratio like variables at the end of the data set.

3. Using syntax or point and click run the most appropriate UNIVARIATE STATISTICS and GRAPHS on your new scale(s).

4. Save your work and email your .spv file to yourself.

Part B: INTERPRETATION

Title Page: A proper title that speaks to your analysis and variables.

Research Problem: Introduction of topic area, statement of research question(s) to be addressed (including any sub-questions with controls); Statement of the independent and dependent variables to be investigated, statement of control variables (if applicable). For each variable: the question asked in the survey, the response categories and the value labels for each response category, level of measurement (i.e.: nominal, ordinal, I/R) and type of variable (i.e.: string, categorical, discrete or continuous) with explanation and justification for responses with respect to criteria for the level of measurement and type of variable.

Method: Secondary data analysis explained (i.e.: what is secondary data and why is it being used ex: existing data collected by someone else and they are used for convenience and low cost), statement of data set that will be used to investigate the hypotheses, why the data set was chosen (ex: because it included the specific variables related to my research topic/research question).

Data Modification(s), if any: Explanation of need to recode/scale any of the variables (ex: why recoding was necessary, how new variable and categories were created from old variable, and value labels assigned to new categories, level of measurement and type of variable for all recoded variables). This should be done as a table.

Results: Results of statistical analysis are DISCUSSED AND INTERPRETED. Both technical (i.e.: numerical) results are reported and substantive messages (i.e.: interpretation in words of what the numbers imply/mean/represent) are articulated

Conclusion: Technical and substantive summary of ONLY key findings (i.e.: both significant and non-significant relationships found and the numeric results/key statistics which evidence/indicate these findings). Relates these findings back to the null hypotheses for EACH statistical procedure. Relates the findings back to the main research question and sub-questions posed. No discussion of numbers here please.

SPSS Output and Formatting: Output that is CORRECT and COMPLETE including original and recoded variables, definition and labelling of recoded variables with appropriate titles; Graphs titled and numbered; typed, d/spaced, stapled securely with page numbers and 1" margins, subheadings and references.

PLEASE NOTE: Your write-up should clearly direct the reader to your original tables (i.e., see Table 1). Make sure all SPSS output tables are labeled properly with a title. Failure to do so will result in a .25 deduction per table.

All assignments should be typed [12 font), double-spaced with 1" margins on all sides (i.e., should follow a specific writing style like APA, Chicago Manual, etc.). No photocopied SPSS outputs/syntax or copied work from other class mates will be accepted. If such a situation is found, then a grade of ZERO for that assignment will be given.

Your statistical interpretation and application of techniques should reflect your own thinking and writing! No late assignments will be accepted, unless proper documentation is provided. Two marks per day, including weekends will be deducted each, if assignments are overdue without proper documentation.
