Is Earth Warming Up, or Not?

American scientists were taken by surprise when they saw ocean water at the North Pole a few years ago. Only six years earlier in the same location at 90 degrees north latitude, the ice was six feet thick!! During the Eocene Period, 50 million years ago, the world's climate was so warm that tropical animals and plants lived from the North Pole to the South Pole, as revealed by fossil evidence. About 20,000 years ago the climate on Earth was much colder and ice covered much of the surface during a period of time known as the Ice Age.

The Earth has passed through these natural cycles of warming and cooling. Some people claim that at the moment we happen to be passing through a very brief natural warming trend that has only changed Earth's temperature one degree in the last 100 years. However, the vast majority of scientists have evidence that the current warming is not natural, but is caused by humans through the burning of fossil fuels that emit carbon dioxide that traps heat in the atmosphere.
