Question: This week's readings focus on ideology. What is the role of ideology in fostering a climate of violence? How powerful a motivator is it, to push nations into war, and to convince soldiers that the cause is worth dying for? Why do people believe hate filled ideologies; delusions of power and dominance? How important are the psychological factors in all of this as opposed to structural or institutional structures. Could for example the Germans have pushed ahead with their project of world domination and racial policies without having the population or at least the vast majority of the German people behind them? Was it the fear of communism, an d its spread that prolonged the war in Vietnam? These are some of the issues; feel free to raise issues that you think are important from the week's readings.
