The outer membrane of the mitochondria is extremely permeable and allows free movement of solutes between the cytosol and the intermembrane space .such a circumstance would suggest that mitochondria would not be sensitive to hypotonic solutions.yet,placement of mitochondria in hypotonic solutions causes them to swell and eventually lyes .how can this be? What is responsible for the permeability of the outer mitochondrial membrane?
