Case Study- Mary is 47 years old and works in a textile company as Administrative Assistant. Firstly she had seeked help with her senior at work and then went to see her physician. Her nearby situation is revolving around extreme depression. Therefore, she has been put under medication. She was later referred by her physician to a therapist for psychological sustain.
Mary showed evidence of difficulty in sleeping and seemed to have difficulty in her interpersonal relationships, especially those involving her children and family members. Her job situation is a part of the presenting problem as she indicates that she also has difficulty concentrating and has been absent from work for more than is acceptable to the principal. Throughout her initial meeting with the therapist, she cried continuously and evidence shows that she often cries.
The therapist might gather some information from Mary's physician at the time of referral and that she had been visiting latter for quite a number of times for medical help while she had considerable weight loss as well as a poor appetite. Earlier she even showed sign of suicidal thoughts. It is also known that one of the ways Mary copes with depression is to withdraw from interaction with people and even with those who might be able to help her.
It seems that Mary has produced a situation in which the depression she feels actually maintains her problem. The strategy she has chosen to cope with the depression is creating more depression.
