Desmond and Emirbayer in their article "What is Racial Domination" introduce and analyze the concept of race as another social construct and briefly explain its history and the processes through which took up the meanings most commonly in use today in the West. Their emphasis is on what we call "institutional racism," meaning the various practices embedded and operating in corporations, universities, legal systems, political bodies, cultural life and other social collectives.

Institutional racism is a type of power that encompasses the symbolic power to classify groups of people as 'normal' and others as 'abnormal'; the political power to withhold basic rights from people of color and marshal the full power of the state to enforce segregation and inequality; the social power to deny people of color full inclusion or membership in associational life, ; the economic power that privileges Whites in terms of job placement, advancement, wealth and property accumulation.

Select from their book Race in America to read and present some of the chapters that address institutional racism. The chapters Politics, Economics, Housing, Education and Aesthetics are particularly important.
