Playwriting Assignment - Shakespeare Discussion
Description - Please answer the following in 8-10 paragraphs
1. What is the purpose of the Mechanicals in A Midsummer Night's Dream? How do their speech patterns differ from other characters in the play, and what does Bottom contribute to the play as Titania's love interest?
2. Shakespeare's sonnets differ from traditional sonnets in that he thinks about real world issues such as loss of love, aging, and depression. Compare it to the sonnet "O, that you were your self! But, love, you are
No longer yours than you yourself here live;
Against this coming end you should prepare,
And your sweet semblance to some other give.
So should that beauty which you hold in lease
Find no determination; then you were
Your self again after yourself's decease
When your sweet issue your sweet form should bear.
Who lets so fair a house fall to decay,
Which husbandry in honor might uphold
Against the stormy gusts of winter's day
And barren rage of death's eternal cold?
O, none but unthrifts, dear my love, you know.
You had a father; let your son say so."
3. Puck (or Robin) is a character who causes mischief but not necessarily harm. How do his actions, and his monologue in the end of the play, show that he is not necessarily an antagonist, but rather a positive character?
4. The theme of control is huge in A Midsummer Night's Dream. Choose a conflict that involves control (could be father daughter, or something between the lovers) and analyze how it contributes to the larger theme of control.
5. What do you feel Othello's tragic flaw actually was? Discuss how this lead to his downfall in the play.
6. How does Iago feel about and treat women throughout the play? What personality traits does this display, and how do they maybe tie into his master plan to bring down Othello?
