Assessment Questions - The UN Climate Change Conference COP24 - took place in December 2018 in Katowice, Poland.

Q1. Discuss what is the purpose of these international Climate Conference (Summit) meetings. Why do they need to be set in a global context? Why have the COP meetings been controversial in both their aims and outcomes over the past decade?

Q2. Discuss some of the many initiatives discussed at recent Conferences that are focused on helping to achieve the global climate targets set? What do the Confernece programs focus on? What were the main areas of discussion at COP24?

Q3. Discuss some of the main challenges that these Climate Summits face in terms of achieving the climate targets set? Have these challenges changed over recent years and why? What do you believe are the most significant challenges?

Q4. Some countries have readily signed onto the climate targets - and other have not. Provide a few examples of countries that have signed on - and why they did and contrast this discussion with discussion on why some countries have not and give examples of their reasoning (be specific).

Q5. What do Meadows and Meadows (*1972 and 1992) suggest are the potential implications of not achieving a reduction in GHG emissions over the next 30-50 years?

Q6. Discuss other potential options for managing global climate change that are NOT included in the COP programs. Discuss some of the advantages and disadvantages of these programs. Use your own ideas to suggest what you think could be powerful actions/programs that perhaps have not yet been considered.

Assessment Grading - This course unit is worth 25 credit points towards an approved postgraduate course (e.g. the Graduate Diploma or Master of Sustainability Management or any other relevant, approved course at Curtin). Grading is on the basis of a percentage score (0-100%). Following Curtin’s general grading policy, students pass the unit with a total score of 50% or above. For this unit, Assignment 1 (Global sustainability challenges – sustainable population growth 40%) and Assignment 2 (Global sustainability challenge – climate change 60%) need to be undertaken. The unit score is the sum of the scores for Assignment 1 and 2 (making up 100% of the total score). Both assessments will rely heavily on good literature searches in order to capably answer the questions given.
