What is Progressivism? Would it always fit our modern definition of what is "progressive?" How did progressives preach a "social gospel?" In your opinion, were progressives calling for social reform, or a social revolution (this answer may depend on which person you select)?

Your Assignment:

Choose one person from the list below to illustrate as an example of progressivism, showcasing that person's particular version of reform, including the specific cause or social structure this person wishes to reform. Within your discussion, answer as many of the above questions. Include 5 images of your reformer and his/her cause. You may choose one portrait style image, but please make the rest of them central to your reformer's work. Examples: the cover of book your reformer wrote, an image of something they attempted to reform, etc.

To wrap up your discussion: John Green forwards the idea that the Progressive Era came quite close to socialism. Revisit his argument (found in the Crash Course video for the week). In your opinion, did they come close to socialism? Or was Green exaggerating? Use facts to back up your assertions!

Your Choices:

  • Jane Addams
  • Upton Sinclair
  • Lincoln Steffens
  • Ida Tarbell
  • Samuel Hopkins Adams
  • Ray Stannard Baker
