Question 3 - Case Scenario
You are an intake/initial assessment worker working in a community health centre. Your role is to carry out the initial assessment and gather as much information as you respectfully can so you can then effectively refer the client/s to the correct worker, or other centre/program to minimise the number of times the client has to tell their story.
A man comes into the centre. He appears stoned and nodding off as he is sitting waiting at reception. You take him through to the interview room for the assessment. After introducing yourself you gather the basic information; his name, address, age, if he is working or not and if on any benefits, and if he has a partner and children.
His name is Pierre, he is 42 and he has lived in Australia for 6 years. His partner is African American and they have 8 children. Pierre was born in French Guinea and he met his partner while studying in New Orleans in the USA.
You notice that Pierre has brightened up when talking about his history.
You ask what health issues he has and he tells you he has been suffering from Hepatitis C for a couple of years. He tells you he has been drinking too much - he doesn't think so, but his partner does, and she has said he has to do something about this or she is going to kick him out.
Pierre works as a financial advisor and earns a high wage; this doesn't make sense as Pierre looks unkempt, untidy and unclean.
Pierre starts to look unsettled and nervous; you ask is there anything else he would like to say. Pierre says he has recently discovered he is HIV positive and is freaked out and frightened. He is also worried about his eldest children as they are asking questions about his health.
Pierre has not told his partner or anyone else about his health and does not know what to do next. Pierre starts to cry.
Through his muffled sobs, Pierre tells you that he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder ten years ago but has not told anyone about it as he is ashamed of having a mental illness. He was on medication but it ran out soon after he came to Australia and he has not registered with a psychiatrist in Australia. He smokes a little pot to help him cope with some of the symptoms.
Now answer the following four (4) questions:
1. Identify the main issues for Pierre.
2. What is Pierre's primary concern? How would you collaborate with him to develop self-determined actions regarding this issue?
3. List three (3) other services that could provide support to Pierre to meet the needs that the community health service can't meet.
4. What are some open questions you might ask Pierre?
Note - Word limit: 1000words. Please make sure to provide APA style reference for each question. Thanks.
