Purpose
Adults are just not getting adequate fiber in their diets. Low fiber intakes are associated with greater risk for obesity, diabetes and colon cancer. You are to locate and read current research on the fiber habits of adults and compare it with your fiber recommendation. You will reassess your fiber intake when you complete your dietary analysis project later in the semester.
Directions
Using your investigative research skills, locate the most current article on average intake of fiber for adults in America. The information can be found in the US Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, Food Surveys Research Group data base. Check out their research from the latest NHANES survey - What We Eat in America at www.ars.usda.gov/ba/bhnrc/fsrg.
After reading the findings, answer the following questions:
a. What is your personal daily fiber recommendation?
b. What is the current average daily intake of fiber for adults according to the research?
