Question: Part One: Problem Set 1: One-sample Chi-Square

File: Open "Module 7 Exercise File 1" found in Blackboard Course Content (Course Guides and Assignment Instructions-Assignment Instructions-SPSS Homework-SPSS Homework 7 Files).

Research Scenario: In a study of recidivism in different offender populations, a community psychologist studies a sample of 21 prisoners to determine how many of those who are released go back to prison within 12 months, within 24 months, or not at all.The frequencies are recorded in Module 7 Exercise File 1, in which a 0 means no recidivism, a 1 means the offender returned to prison within 12 months, and a 2 means the offender returned to prison within 24 months. Conduct a one-sample chi square analysis to determine whether recidivism occurs at equal or different frequencies within these time periods.

1. Paste your SPSS output.

2. Answer the following questions:

a. What is the percent of offenders who returned to prison overall?

b. What is the p value of the chi square test?

c. What is the chi square value?

3. What are the expected frequencies for the three categories of offenders?

4. Write a current APA-style Results section based on your analysis. All homework "Results sections" should follow the examples given in the SPSS tutorial presentation and the Course Content document "Writing Results of Statistical Tests in APA Format." Remember to include a decision about the null hypothesis.

Problem Set 2: Chi-Square Test for Independence

File: Open "Module 7 Exercise File 2" found in Blackboard Course Content (Course Guides and Assignment Instructions-Assignment Instructions-SPSS Homework-SPSS Homework 7 Files).

Research Scenario: In a second study of recidivism in different offender populations, the community psychologist studies a sample of 51 prisoners who have committed drug offenses (n = 17), sex offenses (n = 17), and violent offenses (n = 17) to determine how many of those who are released go back to prison within 12 months. Using Module 7 Exercise File 2, conduct a cross-tabs analysis/chi-square test for independence to determine whether the proportions of recidivism are the same or different across different offender categories.Use the "weighted cases" method.

1. Paste SPSS output.

2. Answerthe following questions:

a. What is the percent of drug offenders who returned to prison?

b. What is the chi square value?

c. What is the effect size, or the strength of the relationship, between offender categories and recidivism? (See section on effect size in Lesson 41.)

3. Create a clustered bar graph to show the differences in the number of offenders who returned to prison for the different categories of offender.

4. Write a Results section in current APA format based on your results. All homework "Results sections" should follow the examples given in the SPSS tutorial presentation and the Course Content document "Writing Results of Statistical Tests in APA Format." Remember to include a decision about the null hypothesis.

Part Two: Problem Set 1: The One-Sample Chi-Square

Research Scenario: A social psychologist is curious about people's judgments concerning the likelihood that prisoners will re-offend given certain information about the prisoners. He provides volunteers with information concerning hypothetical prisoners, then asks if they believe the prisoner is less likely, no more or less likely, or more likely to re-offend. He records these frequencies in the table below.Conduct a one-sample chi square to determine whether the frequencies are equal across the categories.

The steps of the test will be the same as the ones you have been practicing in Part One of the assignment- the only difference is that you are now responsible for creating the data file as well. Remember to name and define your variables under the "Variable View," then return to the "Data View" to enter and analyze the data.

Less likely to re-offend           No more or less likely to re-offend             More likely to re-offend

17                                                   11                                                       15

a) Paste SPSS output.

b) Create a bar graph depicting your results.

c) Write an APA-style Resultssection based on your analyses. All homework "Results sections" should follow the example given in the SPSS tutorials and the Course Content document "Writing Results of Statistical Tests in APA Format." Remember to include a decision about the null hypothesis.

Part Three: Cumulative Homework

Problem Set 1: Choose the correct method from tests learned in previous modules.

Research Scenario:An I/O psychologist is studying whether an employee's satisfaction with his/her supervisor predicts his/her overall job satisfaction.Choose the correct test to analyze this question, set up the SPSS file, and run the analysis. Follow the directions under the table on the following page.

b. Paste appropriate SPSS graph.

c. Write an APA-style Results section based on your analyses. All homework "Results sections" should follow the example given in the SPSS tutorials and the Course Content document "Writing Results of Statistical Tests in APA Format" (note: you do not have to refer to a figure). Remember to include a decision about the null hypothesis. (3 pts)

LAB PROJECT PHASE 4 -RESULTS SECTION INSTRUCTIONS

Now that you have analyzed your data and received feedback, it is time to write a current APA-style Results section describing the outcome of your study. This Results section will contain more information than most sections you have been writing in the course. Here are the required elements (also covered in the "Lab Project Overview and Instructions" document):

• Were the results significant or not? Include a statistical statement in current APA format.

• Do these results lead you to accept or reject the null hypothesis?

• What are the strengths and weaknesses of the statistical test that was used?

• What are the characteristics of the sample or the data collection method that should be taken into consideration when interpreting these results that you would mention briefly to the reader?

Remember that further interpretation should be saved for the discussion in Discussion Board Forum 2 (Lab Project Phase 5).

Refer to "Lab Project Overview and Instructions"in addition to this document when completing this phase.
