Per the analogy: "Because you are good at directing a choir does not mean you have the ability to lead a Broadway show." How many times is this mistake made in assigning tasks or promoting individuals for what is perceived as possession of elevated skill sets? Are you familiar with the phrase, "People have a tendency to rise to their level of inability." I first heard this in a organizational leadership course. The context for the statement was leadership and promotion within organizations. The point of the conversation: in some instances, organizations will tend to promote "less than" in order to retain productivity. Put simply - the more inept a person, the higher within the company they tend to rise. Why? 1) you can't fire people for doing their job. 2) for the sake of productivity you have (at a minimum) to keep the status quo (by some measure) in motion. So what do you do?
