A college age student came to your office with a main complaint of chronic back and leg pain due to an injury while playing a sport as a Division 1 athlete. He lost his scholarship since his injury is so serious that his playing career is over. He reports low mood, a decrease in appetite, weight loss, and disruption of sleep since the injury. He admits to a sense of loss due to his inability to play. He shares that he feels hopeless for his future since he will never become a professional athlete or coach. He has lost interest in doing everyday activities including going to class. He reports that he is unable to get out of bed. He has been stock-piling his pain medication to use as an "out."
