John is a 24-year old man presenting in your office complaining of a snake bite on his left ankle that occured while working in his yard just 15 minutes ago. He said "it happened so fast he didn't get a chance to see what kind of snake it was." Tom denies shortness of breath or feeling faint, but complains of swelling and pain at the bite site and the beginnings of a headache. Vital signs are: BP 110/75, heart rate 98 bpm, RR 18/min. Upon exam of the left lateral ankle, the nurse practitioner notes 10 cm of edema with 2 puncture marks. What is the next most appropriate action(s) for the nurse practitioner to take?
