Assignment:

A high school art teacher has a teacher candidate from a local college. The teacher candidate, Ms. Johnson, is very creative and the students seem to love having her teach the class. Most of them get "A's" on everything, regardless of the quality of the work.

Ms. Johnson's discipline system is almost non-existent, students are often tardy with nothing done about it, and sometimes the students seem to rule the class. Ms. Johnson is assertive with her friends and faculty members but seems to have problems being assertive in the classroom.

Due to these basic issues, the classes are very rowdy and other teachers in the building often complain. To compound the problem, Ms. Johnson does not attend meetings, meet deadlines on time for her paperwork, and her lesson plans are a mess. Her Supervising Teacher has talked to her about the problems she has heard about and observed. Post-conferences after observations seem to go well and Ms. Johnson agrees she needs to change, yet nothing seems to be done differently and the problems go unresolved.

  • What is Ms. Johnson's level of orientation? (Module 2 Resources: Levels of Orientation)
  • What should her Supervising Teacher be doing? What coaching role(s) could they take? (Module 2 Resources: Coaching Roles)
  • What problem(s) needs to be worked on first?
  • How can the problem(s) be resolved? What data collection method would you use to observe and provide feedback? (Modules 3-5 Resources: Data Collection Methods)
  • What could be next steps for the Supervising Teacher and Ms. Johnson?
