Question: A 6 year old boy of mediterranean descent is admitted into the emergency room with headache, vomiting, fever. Physical examination reveals nuchal neck rigidity consistent with meningitis. The child presents with lip cyanosis, pallor, weariness, tachycardia, and dark colored urine. methemoglobin level is 7.6. (Normal <1.0). At this time, hemolytic crisis is considered and the patient is transfused with 400 mL of erythrocytes. What is most likely explanation for this patients hemolytic crisis.
