Helping the CEO Think about Her Challenge

After reading the scenario described in unit 1, you recognize that Darleen is interested in enlisting your support in attempting t find resolution to what she has communicated is the emergence of a somewhat toxic organizational culture. To make matters worse, in the time you spent preparing for this consulting endeavor, she has observed in cold hard facts a trend that she was worried was emerging. The company was getting into a slump. At twenty years of existence, they had developed a rather predictable pattern of seasonal sales expectations with steady growth for years. While there had been a slight dip recently, most had expected it to be somewhat of an anomaly. Unfortunately, this was not the case. An unprecedented follow up dip had come as well, and Darleen's concerns were peaked.

In addressing this issue, you are cautious not to overreact to these latest trends. Indeed, this is a system wide issue, but you are determined to begin, with somewhat of a singular focus, in talking to her about some of the individual performers on her "C" level team. What you are going to ask her to do in this interview is to explore the "head" and "heart" skills of some of the top leaders in the company. To do this, you know that you are going to have to explain to her exactly what you would like to learn from your interview. For this homework, you are to author an authentic performance task (APT) in the form of a memo which will proceed your meeting. The goal of this memo will be for you to explain to her the importance of observing and promoting both head and heart skills as discussed in the readings and in your discussion questions earlier.

Your work should come in the form of a formal APA paper and come in the following components.

• Component I: Introduction - In the introduction, remind Darleen of the meeting and your intention in relation to evaluating these important heart and head issues. Be more specific in the memo describing what you want.

• Component II: Explore with clarity what is meant by the pursuit of knowledge, skills, and experience (or head skills). Articulate the explanation in such a way that she will be prepared to talk about each of her chief level leaders in relationship to this important skill set.

• Component III: Explore with clarity what is meant by the pursuit of emotional intelligence. Articulate the explanation in such a way that she will be prepared to talk about each of her chief level leaders in relationship to this important skill set.

Organization & Conclusion: Conclude the memo by reminding her why the examination of these skills is important and give her any bit of information you think would be necessary to help prepare her for this all-important conversation. As a consultant, your goal is obviously to help her find answers. The best think you can do is to train Darleen and other members of the team to be able to find these answers themselves.
