2- Working description of religion on page 13 of our text?
A developed religion is an integrated system of beliefs, lifestyle, ritual activities, and social institutions by which individuals give meaning to (or find meaning in) their lives by orienting themselves to what they experience as holy, sacred, or of the highest value.
A good aspect of the definition is what people experience as holy, sacred and divine. This is something that totally transcends their being and allows them to operate beyond the hassles of daily living. An example for me as a catholic is being my neighbor's keeper and doing charity works. Giving back to the community and caring for the less fortunate is the way a catholic expresses an outward sign of inward grace. What's an example for you?
Usually when we discuss religion, we do not immediately correlate religion with social institutions; After all on the surface we separate state and religion in America. What is meant by religion as social institution and what's the best example of this?
3-Discuss the differences between looking at religion from a social-scientific perspective or religion as part of the humanities. Which perspective do you believe is most appropriate? Why?
4-In this short activity, please address the following questions as a summary and reflection of what you learned and how you met the objectives of the week.
