Discussion 1: The High Renaissance in Italy represents a peak in artistic genius. Indeed, this was the high point for such great artists as Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Raphael. It almost seems as if Art asked itself, "What could possibly come after this?" Hence, Mannerism arose, first in Florence and Rome, then the rest of Italy and, eventually, all over Europe. But, just what is Mannerism and how did it hope to improve upon the artistic achievements of the High Italian Renaissance? Discuss whether Mannerism was a fitting and ennobling style to follow the High Italian Renaissance, or a disappointing and lack-luster after-thought.
