"Is it really better to give than to receive?"
You are the 35 year old chief executive officer (CEO) of a major hotel management corporation, a position you have held for two years. Six months ago, you hired Lee Hansen as your Vice President of Human Resources. Lee came with excellent references and has been in the human resources field for the past 20 year. Lee is a single parent, caring for two teenagers, Andy, age 17 and Jessica, age 14.
One month ago Lee returned from a human resources conference. Walking by your office, Lee stopped in and said, "I noticed that you went to State University and I know their mascot is the panther. I saw this little six-inch porcelain panther and thought you'd like it." You accepted the gift with gratitude and placed it on your credenza readily visible.
It's now Monday morning. You are in early, as always and shortly after your arrival Lee comes in, paper bag in hand and says, " I notice that you like to wear rep ties and you favorite color is blue. I was shopping on Saturday and happened to see this and thought it was perfect for you. It's your school color. " Lee lays the tie on your desk before you. It is a nice tie from a notable clothing store.
