Case: When Rep. Shirley Chisholm and Rev. Jesse Jackson decided, independentiy, to run for president, they knew that they gained a voice on a national scale. Both of them immediately came to national attention, and they were given the opportunity to share their views and goals with a national audience. Both Chisholm and Jackson were determined to use this new platform to raise awareness for and of the needs of marginalized people in the United States, and both argued that their very presence on that platform was a. sign that American politics and leadership were changing. This week, i have shared two videos with you, one from Shirley Chisholm's and one from Jesse Jackson's political campaigns. The video of Shirley Chisholm includes her statement upon announcing her candidacy for the presidency in 1972 and some other responses to audience questions. The video of Jesse Jackson includes his speech to the Democratic National. Convention in Atlanta, Georgia in 1988 (he begins speaking at 18:10 and completes his speech at 1:08:12) at the conclusion of his second campaign for the presidency.
