The style that stood out to me as my own when I first read about leadership styles is the servant leadership style. The servant leadership style is defined or explained as the leadership style where the leader looks out for the growth and development of their members other than themselves. With this type of leadership style, the leader decides to place the members' needs and wants first and prioritize them before satisfying their own needs and wants. This leadership style stood out to me as my own because I am usually the type to always look for growth and how positively the people around me being it friends, work colleagues, or family members are developing or succeeding and how best I can see to it that every single one of them is happy.
This leadership style stands out to me because I love to support, motivate, and inspire my team members. I also possess other characteristics like active listening, empathy, awareness, stewardship, commitment to the growth of others, conceptualization, and persuasion as mentioned in the article. Being able to adopt and prioritize the habit of actively listening helps build a stronger communication network between teammates which in turn helps to grow a smoother and healthier work environment. I position myself as an equal to my team members and always let them know that I am there to support them.
In my role as a team servant leader at school, I can utilize this leadership style by allowing my teammates to offer different perspectives on how a group project should be carried out in order to create a safe and growing environment where members of the group can communicate freely. At work, prioritizing the work-related needs of team members, I will be setting the stage to accomplish more while maintaining peak team morale. In this environment, employee growth and performance reach new heights, and everyone benefits. At home, I put my family's needs ahead of mine and make decisions based on the input from each and every member before getting to a final conclusion that works for everyone.
The democratic leadership style, which is the opposite of autocratic leadership, provides all members of the group with the opportunity to participate in the decision-making process. This means that democratic leaders "are highly transparent, giving team members all the information they need to reach a decision. They encourage all members to voice their opinions and ideas, and work together to find a solution" ("What Is Leadership: Understanding Different Leadership Styles"). With the democratic leadership style, as a leader you are able to include your teammates or members in every decision-making, there is collaboration, inclusivity, trust building, and promotion of good ideas as a result of trusting members to come up and generate ideas. I can collaborate with someone with the democratic leadership style by building trust and respect and by encouraging the person to voice their views or perspectives on issues that are presented. This will create a great working environment between the two of us which will also result in growth and development.
