1. Brooke: According to our text book, "homeostasis is the dynamic equilibrium maintaining appropriate body functions", which basically means our bodies need to remain in a state of balance in order to function properly. Like with anything that requires balancing, the set point it the point in which proper balance is achieved, it is the goal of the homeostasis process. One of the many physiological functions that our bodies preforms is the maintaining of an appropriate blood glucose levels, After we consume food, our blood glucose levels rise, and our pancreas ( one of the glands that make up our endocrine system) releases insulin (the hormone produced by the pancreas gland) to bring the blood glucose levels back down to our set point (this is an example of a negative feedback loop). If a person has diabetes, after food is consumed and blood glucose levels rise, a sufficient amount a insulin is not secreted by the pancreas so the blood glucose levels do not decrease so it is unable to return to the set point. This is a good example of how homeostasis is not achieved.

2. Katherine: I found this reading to be interesting because it really should make parents think about what they feed their children and how much. If we as parents do not apportion the amounts of food we feed our children we are contributing to them becoming obese. As the article states we can acknowledge under eating and the reality of eating but to rationalize obesity as being as the result of an eating disorder. It is true that the American people are addicted to foods that are high in fats and other contents that contribute to the obesity factor. Especially with children whereas the numbers of obese children have reach astronomical levels. We as parents need to set an example for our children by what we feed not only ourselves and by the levels of physical activity we do. If we as the parents eat less and do more physical activity we are not only showing children it is possible to maintain a decent weight but the ability to live healthier. For example when children want to snack on something give them more fruits and less of the potato chips. Get them in the habit of when they go with their friends to a fast food restaurant to look for something healthy on the menu. As we always hear "you are what you eat".

3. Anthony: Homeostasis is the process in which the body maintains normal, healthy ranges for things like temperature, energy intake and growth. The immune response contributes to homeostasis by preparing the body to fight off infection and to help the healing process in case harm occurs. During infection, the immune system will cause the body to develop a fever. The immune system also causes an increase in blood flow to bring oxygen and other immune cells to sites of infection. In addition, the immune system helps in wound healing, so that proper barriers in organs can be reformed such that those organs can correctly participate in homeostasis.

When a body is infected by bacteria or viruses, the body must invest a lot of energy to fight off the invaders. Otherwise, there is no point in maintaining proper homeostasis of water levels and such if the whole organism is going to die from infection. Thus, the brain is able to detect molecules called pyrogens, which are released by infected cells or infectious agents. Pyrogens tell the brain to increase body temperature by telling the body to retain heat. This results in a fever. Fevers are meant to slow down bacteria and viruses, which do not like high temperatures.
