What is happening to business corporations today, and how are they run? The world economy is increasingly influenced by the rise of large business corporations.

Ever since Adolf Berle and Gardiner Means published their celebrated study The Modern Corporation and Private Property nearly 90 years ago, it has been accepted that most of the largest firms are not run by those who own them.

AT&T, Comcast, Verizon, Walt Disney Corporation, and ViacomCBS are among the world's biggest media and communication corporations; all are based in the United States.

The large corporation drives not only patterns of consumption but also the experience of employment in contemporary society; as large corporations have moved much of their production overseas, the work lives of many Americans have changed.

Institutional capitalism is based on the practice of corporations holding stock shares in other firms.

Rather than investing directly by buying shares in a business, individuals can now invest in money market, trust, insurance, and pension funds that are controlled by large financial organizations, which in turn invest these grouped investments in industrial corporations.

The United States is home to the largest number of firms among the top 500 transnational corporations, although th share of American-based companies has fallen sharply in recent years as the number of transnational corporations based in other countries- especially Asian countries such as South Korea and China- -has increased.
