This topic is on gun control. Although the United States is not unique in having high proportions of gun ownership among the populace, it is rather rare among peer countries. Moreover, the United States is also a world leader in two categories: number of mass shootings, and number of homicides involving handguns. Some feel that there is a correlation between our high rate of gun ownership and our firearms-related crimes. Others feel that firearms make us more safe than we would otherwise be: that criminals will find a way of getting weapons regardless of the law, and that police cannot always arrive soon enough to protect victims, who would be better off if they were themselves armed.

Regardless of how you feel about the matter, are there certain restrictions that might reduce our levels of gun-related deaths, and would you support these restrictions if they could be proven to reduce gun crime? How great would the reduction have to be to justify curtailing the freedom to own a firearm? Would more strict gun control legislation reduce our suicide-related gun deaths, or would those people find a way to commit suicide anyway? And are you worried that there might be deleterious side effects to any policies that were enacted to control gun deaths?
