During the course of condom distribution to local students, Dr. Elders was informed that the condoms were breaking at an alarming rate. How did she respond to this information? Do you agree with Dr. Elders' response to this revelation? Explain and Discuss.
Dr. Elders justified her behavior on this issue by way of "the new benefit argument." That is, while some unwanted pregnancies would result and some venereal diseases, including AIDS, might be transmitted, more pregnancies and infections would have occurred without the condom distribution. Provide your opinion on this rationale from an ethical standpoint.
Dr. Elders considered her decision to be in the best interests of the people of Arkansas. Some argue that she did not have the moral authority to continue condom distribution without informing parents and students regarding the full range of facts at hand. Do you think Dr. Elders acted in the best interests of the people or not? Explain your opinion and discuss.
Dr. Elders chose to keep relevant facts about the quality of the condoms secret. She was not open and honest about her decision-making process. Discuss this behavior on the part of any government official.
