Alex is a young person of color who lives in Boyle Heights, California. Alex's parents are hardworking people, neither of whom have had the opportunity to go to college. Alex is a middle child, with an older brother and younger sister. Alex was a bright student who always earned high grades in school, but in 7th grade things began to change. Suddenly, subjects that had been easy to understand, like math and science, were difficult to grasp, and Alex couldn't keep up with all the homework that was piling up every day. Alex's friends didn't seem to care much about grades, and Alex was worried that they would not want to be around someone who studied hard in school. Alex's parents also seemed to be getting more strict and unreasonable (or at least it felt like that to Alex). On top of all that, Alex's eyesight was getting worse, and it was getting really hard to read the textbooks and the things the teacher was writing on the board.
