Companies and organizations face many challenges as they enter the next millennium. Arguably the largest issue is succession planning as baby boomers gear up to retire. Companies today have to look for replacement workers for their retiring employees and have to start understanding not only how to attract these young workers, but how to retain the talent. The fact is one of the biggest challenges is the attitudes of older, experienced workers who are not only predominantly older, but hold onto more traditional views of the workplace.
The new generation believes it has something of value to offer and will not allow for the seen and not heard philosophy that exists in the older mentality.
It is far easier to view the new generation as unmotivated and lazy, than it is to face the fact that we need to change how we do business to move into the future. The key to any business is to motivate and retain their talent. If you don't, another business will.
A Personal Plan for Implementation
Using supervision/managerial techniques you have seen or used in the workplace, formulate an
action plan to introduce new habits/behaviours and tools into your daily work. Your plan should be focused on young workers and changes that will assist them in building success and retain their roles in the workplace.
Be sure to give an overall picture of your departmental workplace, your role, and where this implementation plan can have a positive impact.
Include a brief description of the young workers (Gen Y/Millennials) and their challenges to help position your plan and suggested activities and changes presented in your plan.
Building a Personal Plan;
1. Describe the challenge/issue/problem that you are trying to address.
2.What is goal or goals of the plan?
3.What will you need to achieve these goals?
4.Who will "buy in" to help you achieve these goals?
5.What obstacles might you face?
6.How will you overcome these obstacles?
7.How will you measure success?
8.What is the benefit of accomplishing this goal
