Face is somebody's emotion but it is also something that could be lost. It can either be maintained or enhanced but it always must be consistently attended to in interaction. It comes from Goffman. He states that face is the positive we see in ourselves. Everybody has certain facial expressions that explains their emotional state. Saving Face is something that they do to keep their dignity. To show no emotional state of Shame

My question is what kind of face you carry most of the day? Is it real or fake to hide yourself from the world?

Cahill, Spencer E., et al. Inside Social Life Readings in Sociological Psychology and Microsociology. Oxford University Press, 2018.

Hello Class,

Q. What common rituals do we engage in when we are in a public restroom? What values are these rituals protecting?

A. While in the bathroom, we often engage in a number of rituals involving inspecting and repairing our appearances in addition to "interpersonal rituals" when people naturally relieve themselves (Cahill, 2018, p.268).

Managing and repairing our appearances often require the need to retreat to more private areas in order to maintain the image that we present to others. Bathrooms also give us a more secure area to engage in what the author described as, "a self-service repair shop" (Cahill, 2018, p. 270). Bathrooms are readily equipped with equipment such as stalls for privacy and mirrors to adjust clothing, makeup, and hair for their personal front.

Additionally, bathrooms enable private conversations to take place when additional people are engaged in an activity that requires maintaining a particular image. This can consist of what the author discussed as a staging activity between the performance team. It can involve discussions about performances, preventative measures, and rehearsals for the performance (Cahill, 2018, p. 272-273).

Question for the class. Have you observed a change in someone's normal appearance or behavior while in a bathroom that was unexpected? For me personally, the complete breakdown of individual privacy in Marine Corps bootcamp was extremely odd and took getting use to. There was no privacy or bathroom to retreat to.

The entire cycle consisted of group showers, removal of doors on stalls, and "doubling-up" on urinals at times. Despite thinking things couldn't get any worse, during second phase, we relocated to a barracks that had no walls between stalls. At this point, I just kept my head down while conducting my business. I felt I had lost all sense of individuality and so did others, I suppose. Nothing was really hidden from the 70-80 others at that point. You were observed naked, defecating, and doubled-up while urinating. I suppose losing your individuality was the intent; however, I never asked why.

What common rituals do we engage in when we are in a public restroom? What values are these rituals protecting?

When entering a public restroom we commonly stay quiet and distant to the others inside the restroom. This is often done out of respect for other's privacy, while also being done on account of established societal norms. Similar to the lecture notes, "This structure to interaction helps maintained shared meaning and a cooperative interactional structure" (Goffman). If the stalls or toilets are occupied, we wait for our turn respectfully and provide space to anyone needing it. The values that these rituals seem to protect are those along the lines of integrity, honesty, and respect for one's privacy.

A question for the class: Which values do you most recognize when partaking in proper bathroom etiquette or traditions? Are these similar values to the ones you personally feel are important to maintaining structure within society?
