RESEARCH QUESTION

What is the epidemiological profile of end stage renal patients on chronic haemodialysis in Gaborone?

AIM

To determine the epidemiological profile of end stage renal patients on chronic haemodialysis in Gaborone and to identify factors that might influence them.

OBJECTIVES

1) To describe the socio-demographic characteristics of ESRD patients on chronic haemodialysis

• Age, Gender, Ethnicity, Socio-economic status, Level of education

2) To determine the clinical characteristics of ESRD patients on haemodialysis

• Comorbidities (Obesity, diabetes mellitus and hypertension),

• Co-infections - hepatitis B and C, HIV, tuberculosis

• Drug history

• Laboratory tests (CD4 count and viral load) (at the initiation of dialysis, during study period)

3) To determine the prevalence of HIV among end stage renal patients on chronic haemodialysis

4) To compare profiles of HIV positive and negative patients

5) To examine the association of ESRD and co-morbid disease status
