Assignment:

A 31-year-old black female is admitted to the emergency room with nausea and vomiting. She has type 1 diabetes mellitus and uses an insulin pump. The infusion site where the insulin pump tubing enters his skin is red and swollen, with yellow discharge. On admission to the emergency room, the patient's blood glucose is 280 mg/dl.

What do you suspect is her diagnosis? What could be causing it? Explain your answer.

I know the answer is diabetic ketoacidosis, caused by the infection at the insulin pump and possible insulin failure, due to the site infection. I'm having trouble understanding the pathophysiology, just off of the high blood sugar and nausea and vomiting alone.
