Assignment:

Art As Primary Source

In this board, you get to select your own source! In this case a visual source.

Please address the following

There is a great deal of historical debate as to whether or not Renaissance cultural production is more of an evolution or a revolution away from the Middle Ages. Read the piece of art carefully and explore major themes in Renaissance cultural production. Based on these themes, explore cultural shifts that you see in the art that you selected. Based on your visual source, what is typical of the cultural production of the Renaissance? Does it mark a shift into "modernity"?

Be sure to read about both the Middle Ages and the Renaissance in the textbook before doing this essay. It is not necessary to respond to your classmates, but you can. The Met has a helpful chronology that discusses Renaissance cultural production in Italy and beyond. Or you can select any work of art that was produced in Italy between 1350 to 1500. It's okay if you selected the same work as someone else, and yes, it's fine if it's something famous (like the Mona Lisa).

This question is asking you to describe what you see, and what it tells us about the culture in which it was produced. I look forward to seeing what you select!
