CRJ 410 Guidelines for Reading Record
This assignment is focused on summary, significance, and assessment of a chapter on a policing innovation from the main textbook in our class. The main objectives include development of analytical skills relating to writing and reading comprehension and assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of the assigned policing innovation. Students will be asked to find one peer-review, empirical journal article on the particular innovation covered in the assigned chapter from our textbook. Completing these records helps students to organize their thoughts and make connections between readings that ultimately assist in learning of the class material.
Each record for the readings should be a minimum of one (1) single-spaced page in length to a maximum of two (2) single-spaced pages in length. Be direct and concise. State your points with what you feel as relevant information to able to explain any reader the major points, focus, uniqueness, and potential for contributions to the literature of the readings. These records are not intended to be exhaustive, but rather should involve selective and effective synthesis. There are no right or wrong answers, but rather it is your responsibility as the recorder for the reading to be clear and understandable with the assumption that a reader has not read the reading(s) on which the assignment is based.
There are three major sections of the reading that must be covered (see below) and you can (not required) organize your recording into section headings if desirable. The assignment is worth 25 points with 5 points for grammar, spelling, organization (flow and coherency of the entire assignment), and proper citations (the selected style is not important but providing the source directly in the text of the assignment (e.g., Skogan and Frydl, p. 10) for major ideas and language and source and page numbers for quotations). Avoid using quotations and write the assignment in our own words.
1). Summary: Provide a brief and concise summary of what is covered in relation to the police innovation and what is the major conclusion/finding. Your answers can be related to the following: what are the main points to the reading? What are objectives the author(s) are trying to meet with the chapter? (1/4 of a page)
2). Significant Idea: State fully and clearly one critical idea, point, concept, theory, method, etc. (whatever is relevant) about the policing innovation highlighted in the chapter and peer-reviewed, empirical journal article. Is this idea clearly and fully developed? Why do the author(s) focus on this point, theory method, data, issue, etc? What justification, if any, do they provide for addressing this issue? Are you convinced that this idea provides the basis for a clear, specific, and detailed assessment of the reading? (1/2 of a page)
3). Assessment: Detail and explain if the overall strengths outweigh the limitations for the innovation. Make sure to explain the basis of your assessment to readers (1/4 page - 6 points)
