Question: Read the following extract and then answer the questions below Trade Unions in China Chinese companies do not welcome trade unions, and those workers who have joined trade unions risk losing their jobs. Collective bargaining is rare in Chinese companies in Africa. Trade unions encounter many problems when trying to organise workers in Botswana as many workers fear for their jobs and thus are forced to endure highly exploitative conditions. Even in cases where workers are unionised, the Chinese employers are reluctant to engage in negotiations and bargaining as they pretend not to understand English or other local languages. The Chinese employers frequently violate several of the core ILO conventions such as: the rights to join trade unions, to bargain collectively, to receive equal remuneration and to be protected against discrimination. Basic rights such as paid leave are often ignored and forced overtime work (without additional compensation). In Botswana, workers are threatened with dismissals if they report labour rights' abuses to the government labour office".
