You can measure acceleration by measuring the deflection of a vertically hanging mass. Suppose an air freshener hangs from the rear view mirror of your car, which is initially at rest. You hit the gas pedal and notice that the air freshener is deflected at an angle of 15 degrees from the vertical. What is your car's acceleration?
