Assignment:
What is the connection between Alexis's obsession with Polina in the first half of the novel and his compulsion to gamble in the second half (and on)? Draw whatever conclusions make sense. (This question can include the matter of Alexis's masculinity and his toleration of Polina's abuse.)
Write a short paper (no more than 750 words) on the question above.
A paper is a paper is a paper no matter how short it is. That is: it has to present an argument that is interesting, coherent and accurate.
Accurate: it describes what happens in the book as a whole. If your argument is right about one section but wrong about another, then it is not ready to be presented.
Coherent: you cannot contradict yourself. If you say that Emma is a dreamer in one paragraph and that she is a hard-headed pragmatist in another, you either have to decide between the two or explain how they can both be correct.
Interesting: an argument that everyone and anyone could come up with won't work. That Emma is selfish goes without saying, so you don't want to waste your paper saying it. (You might need to mention it, but mentioning is not arguing.)
An argument has to be supported by evidence and your best/only evidence is the book itself. That means you have to refer to the book (with page references) and provide quotations that support your point.
Remember: quotations on their own will not serve as evidence. You have to explain how and why your quotations prove your point.
Grammar and punctuation are your friends. A paper is not a DM to your friends. It is not a tweet. If you have trouble with grammar, make your sentences short. Nobody ever claimed that an argument was too clear. You will not impress me with long sentences or big words. In fact, I don't like them. Really, I don't.
