Discussion Post
Sexual dysfunction is a problem that can happen during any phase of the sexual response cycle. It prevents the ability to experience satisfaction from sexual activity. The sexual response cycle traditionally includes excitement, plateau, orgasm, and resolution. Often the causal factor is the result of a disease process or the side effect of medication. While a common condition, many do not address issues with sexual dysfunction with their health care provider due to personal discomfort of the topic.
For this discussion, you will include the following concepts in your discussion post.
I. What is a stepwise approach to counseling patients presenting with sexual dysfunction concerns? Include an explanation of the normal sexual response.
II. Differentiate between common sexual dysfunction conditions and include the pathophysiology for the dysfunction.
III. Illustrate the treatments/management options, both pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies, including aspects of complementary medicine.
IV. Identify the presence of equality in the availability of resources and treatment for sexual health dysfunction in women compared to men.
V. Provide an example of current evidence-based practice guidelines or standards for the treatment for sexual dysfunction.
VI. What are the implications for practice as an FNP? Discuss the family nurse practitioner's role as a member of the interprofessional team related to care of patients with sexual dysfunction.
