Paramedics arrive on the scene of a high school basketball game. In the bleachers, surrounded by the crowd, is a 68 year-old male that having the following symptoms: nausea, angina, and shortness of breath. He states that he had just ate a meatball sandwich about twenty minutes ago and insists that he is just having heartburn. The paramedics believe that the patient is having a myocardial infarction and bring the patient to the hospital for further evaluation, even though the patient is reluctant.

1. What is a myocardial infarction? Describe not only the generic name, but the pathophysiology behind the condition.

2. Why does the patient believe he is just having heartburn? Explain why is heartburn and myocardial infarctions are commonly confused.

3. Were the paramedics correct in bringing the patient to the hospital to rule out a myocardial infarction? Why or why not? (Expand on the consequences of not seeking immediate help).

4. Explain the risk factors that can lead to a myocardial infarction. Does everyone that suffers a myocardial infarction have the risk factors?
