What is a Multimedia Framework?
A Multimedia Framework is the outer shell of a piece of Interactive Media developed using a multimedia framework development system, or multimedia authoring system. The multimedia Framework controls and shows a range of media, including embedded, downloaded or streamed media, and provide a Graphical User Interface for the user to interact with.
These outer shells are everywhere in today's technologically rich society, and vary in look, feel and capability in every way imaginable. They are incredibly diverse, but the tools that are used to build them are relatively few, and converging in the types of overall capability they provide. These development tools for creating media rich presentations, games, interactive experiences and user-friendly front-ends to perhaps larger systems all share a set of similar goal, and functionalities.
A multimedia framework development system should ...
1/ Be relatively "high-level".
• Fast to develop in and not need heavy front-end investment in code development.
• Should avoid long compile times
• Protect low-level memory operations, and do nasty memory management for you
• Should be self-contained, and not rely on fragile collections of external files.
2/ Protect from Operating system specifics.
An important feature of a multimedia framework is that it should be platform independent (cross-platform), as platform dependency goes against the major principles of a networked society. There are so many devices now connecting to the same data sources, the multimedia framework must provide protection from (be "far away from") the specifics of any particular platform.
3/ It must therefore have it's own completely self-contained, internal API. This should do the following:-
• It should give very high level integration and playing of media types (e.g. it gives you a lot of help with fileIO, importing and embedding a wide range of media, internal data management, displaying in windows, networking, low-level graphics and sound operations .... )
• Have a rapid GUI development system
• Have a coding or scripting language to handle user interaction and internal logic. It might have its own "easy to learn" language, or a platform neutral language (e.g. C)
• It should be secure and prevent the creation of virus software etc.
4/ Multimedia framework development systems might also have the following
• Graphics and animation creation capability
• Media editing capability (e.g. editing sound)
• The ability to create platform specific, completely self-contained executables
